Environmental Lab FAQ

Can you test for pesticides?

We are able to test for a number of different pesticides. Our routine pesticide suites are:
Organohalogen/Organochlorine (OH/OC) pesticides - click here for the full list
Organophosphorous (OP) pesticides - click here for the full list
Organonitrogen (ON) pesticides - click here for the full list
In order to select the most appropriate suite some information regarding the suspected pesticides will be necessary.

What anions analysis do you offer?

The standard anions suite offered by Chemex is for fluoride, chloride, nitrite, sulphate, bromide and nitrate. This analysis is performed using ion chromatography and is UKAS accredited for natural water and effluent matrices.

What are Internal Standards and Surrogate Compounds?

Internal standard compounds and Surrogate compounds are chemically similar to target compounds, so they behave in a similar way as the compounds being looking for.  These compounds should ideally cover the range of target compounds being analysed for.  These are added to the sample extract for quantitation and system monitoring purposes.
These compounds are tightly controlled.  Not only by method guidelines but also Chemex's own statistically derived limit ranges.  This information is available to be reported in a corporate class package on request and is included as standard in our first class package .

What are the heavy metals?

The term heavy metals is generally accepted to be any metallic element that has a relatively high density and is toxic or poisonous at low concentrations. The list is a little vague but usually includes arsenic, mercury, cadmium, lead, selenium, zinc, chromium, thallium and antimony, often being extended to additional elements such as copper, nickel and cobalt. Heavy metals are considered to be dangerous due to their tendency to bioaccumulate.

What is the method detection limit (mdl) for compound/parameter/element XXX?

Generally the method detection limit (mdl) value for a compound/parameter or element will appear on the individual analytical suite/parameter page in the chemistry method index. If you can still not find the appropriate mdl for your purposes then please contact Chemex client liaison on +44 (0)1954 252519 or by email.

What leaching methods are available to me?

There are four main types of leaching carried out at Chemex, each having their own particular characteristics and applications. The methods available are DIN leaching, TCLP leaching, EA/NRA leaching and the leaching methods applicable to the Environment Agencies Waste Acceptance Criteria as detailed in BS EN 12457. For further information on the availability and applicability of leaching methods click here.

Why is metals analysis important to me?

The effect of metals in the environment spans the entire spectrum from beneficial, and indeed necessary, through to dangerously toxic. This often depends on the concentration with many metals being either beneficial or toxic depending on the levels. Increasingly, more and more metals are being found to be hazardous to health and disposal of these is being more tightly controlled than ever before, with the main emphasis being on the heavy metals.
